THORACOSPHAERA [[Kamptner, 1927]], p.180-184.  Emendation: [[Fütterer, 1976]], p.119,130 - see below.  Extant calcareous dinoflagellate genus.  According to [[Tangen et al., 1982|Tangen et al. (1982]]), the "type species", [[Thoracosphaera heimii]], represents the calcareous cell wall of a dinoflagellate vegetative stage.  It is unlikely, however, that all the species listed below are dinoflagellates.  [[Fütterer, 1976|Fütterer (1976]]) provided a diagnosis for Thoracosphaera which was not labelled an emendation or revision; in his abstract, however, he refers to the "redefined and revised genus Thoracosphaera".  Type: [[Kamptner, 1927]], text-fig.6, as Syracosphaera pelagica.
