A whip-like structure providing the means of locomotion or facilitating feeding. Dinoflagellates have two flagella: a ribbon-like transverse flagellum with multiple waves and a cylindrical or flattened longitudinal flagellum with one, or only a few, waves. See also axoneme, basal body and striated strand.
