Transverse flagellum

The ribbon-like flagellum which winds to the cell\'s left and encircles the cell, usually in the cingulum. It has multiple waves, an axoneme running along its outer edge, and an inner fibrous contractile striated strand. It is used mainly for propulsion. See also longitudinal flagellum.
