Non- membranous strengthened structure surrounding a cell, external or internal of the cell membrane. In dinoflagellates, it comprises multiple cellulosic thecal plates surrounded by membranes and/or a continuous cellulosic layer - the pellicle - which may be impregnated with dinosporin.
