Originally Pithonella carteri, subsequently Obliquipithonella carteri, thirdly Pirumella carteri, fourthly Obliquipithonella multistrata forma carteri, fifthly (and now) Pirumella multistrata forma carteri. Taxonomic senior synonym (at specific rank): Pithonella (now Pirumella) multistrata, according to Keupp (1992a, p.500) - however, Kohring (1993a, p.65) retained Pithonella carteri (as Obliquipithonella multistrata forma carteri). Taxonomic junior synonym (at specific rank): Pithonella woodburyensis, according to Kohring (1993a, p.65) - however, Pithonella woodburyensis is now considered a taxonomic junior synonym of Pithonella (now Pirumella) tanyphloia.
