Davey and Verdier (1976, p.316) considered this species to be a possible taxonomic synonym of Hystrichosphaeridium (now Florentinia) deanei, the type material of Hystrichokolpoma unispinum representing possibly reworked Cretaceous specimens. Age: early Eocene.
