<nowiki>*</nowiki><I><B>balcombiana</B></I> [[Deflandre and Cookson, 1955]], p.268-269, pl.8, fig.5.&nbsp; Holotype: [[Deflandre and Cookson, 1955]], pl.8, fig.5.&nbsp; Taxonomic senior synonym: <I>[[Pterosperma labyrinthus Appendix A|Pterosperma]]</I> (as <I>[[Nematosphaeropsis labyrinthus|Nematosphaeropsis]]</I>) <I>[[Pterosperma labyrinthus Appendix A|labyrinthus]]</I>, according to [[Reid, 1974|Reid (1974]], p.592) - however, [[Wrenn, 1988|Wrenn (1988]], p.139) retained <I>Nematosphaeropsis balcombiana</I>.&nbsp; [[Head and Westphal, 1999|Head and Westphal (1999]], p.12) considered this species to be the questionable taxonomic senior synonym of <I>[[Nematosphaeropsis rigida]]</I>.&nbsp; Motile equivalent: <I>Gonyaulax spinifera</I> ([[Clapar&#232;de and Lachmann, 1859]]) [[Diesing, 1866]], according to [[Wall and Dale, 1967|Wall and Dale (1967]], p.352; [[Wall and Dale, 1968c|1968c]], p.270).&nbsp; Wrenn in [[Head and Wrenn, 1992|Head and Wrenn (1992]], p.14) recommended that this name be restricted to the holotype.&nbsp; Age: Mid Miocene.
