Originally Peridinium (Appendix B), subsequently (and now) Spongodinium. Of the two illustrations provided by Ehrenberg (1837b), only his pl.1, fig.6 shows a single specimen, which can thus be accepted as the type. However, the validity/authorship of this name may need to be reconsidered as it appears that Ehrenberg (1837b) did not provide a description. Age: Late Cretaceous.
