Jan du Chêne et al. (1986a, p.273) retained this species in Pterodinium. Below (1981a, p.113) named this species Pterodinium bab; "bab" is the Arabic for door. Head et al. (1989b, p.458), citing the then active I.C.B.N. Article 73.10, latinized the epithet "bab" to "babatum". However, I.C.N. Article 60.1 indicates that the spelling of a name/epithet such as "bab" must not be changed. N.I.A. Age: Hauterivian.
