PIRUMELLA Bolli, 1980, p.528.  Calcareous dinoflagellate genus.  Taxonomic senior synonym: Pithonella, by implication in Keupp (1981, p.44), who considered the "type species" of Pirumella, Pirumella edithvincentiae, to be a taxonomic junior synonym of Pithonella (now Pirumella) thayeri - however, Lentin and Williams (1993, p.577) retained Pirumella.  Taxonomic junior synonym: Obliquipithonella, by implication in Lentin and Williams (1985, p.383), who illegitimately included the "type species" of Pirumella, Pirumella edithvincentiae (as a taxonomic junior synonym of Obliquipithonella thayeri) in Obliquipithonella.  Although many authors have retained Obliquipithonella (e.g. Kienel, 1994, p.42), all apparently continue to include Pirumella edithvincentiae in synonymy with Obliquipithonella thayeri (e.g. Kohring, 1993a, p.79).  Following this taxonomic synonymy, Obliquipithonella must continue to be considered a taxonomic junior synonym of Pirumella.  Type: Bolli, 1980, pl.4, figs.1-2, as Pirumella edithvincentiae.
