<B><I>ORTHOPITHONELLA</I></B> Keupp in [[Keupp and Mutterlose, 1984]], p.158.&nbsp; Emendations: [[Keupp and Versteegh, 1989]], p.210; [[Streng et al., 2002]], p.401.&nbsp; Calcareous dinoflagellate genus (see [[Streng et al., 2004]], p.482 and [[Elbr&#228;chter et al., 2008]], p.1300-1301).&nbsp; Taxonomic senior synonym: <I>[[Stomiosphaera]]</I>, according to [[Reh&#225;kov&#225; and Michal&#237;k, 1996|Reh&#225;kov&#225; and Michal&#237;k (1996]], p.93 - however, [[Streng et al., 2004|Streng et al. (2004]], p.482) retained <I>Orthopithonella</I>.&nbsp; Although in proposing this genus Keupp in [[Keupp and Mutterlose, 1984|Keupp and Mutterlose (1984]], p.158), did not validly transfer the "type species" to <I>Orthopithonella</I>, the generic name was still valid since it was based on a pre-existing species name.&nbsp; Type: [[Bolli, 1974]], pl.3, fig.9; pl.12, fig.9; pl.22, fig.3, as <I>[[Pithonella gustafsonii]]</I>.
