THORACOSPHAERA Kamptner, 1927, p.180–184. Emendation: Fütterer, 1976, p.119,130 — see below. Extant calcareous dinoflagellate genus (see Streng et al., 2004, p.483 and Elbrächter et al., 2008, p.1302), currently containg some fossil-based species. According to Tangen et al. (1982), the "type species", Thoracosphaera heimii, represents the calcareous cell wall of a dinoflagellate vegetative stage. It is unlikely, however, that all the species listed below are dinoflagellates. Fütterer (1976) provided a diagnosis for Thoracosphaera which was not labelled an emendation or revision; in his abstract, however, he refers to the "redefined and revised genus Thoracosphaera".
